The existing 5,232’ chilled water system that supports all terminals within the airport, was leaking severely. Comfort Systems was asked to provide pricing and methodology to install almost a mile of 36” new heavy wall piping, above ground, for a new chilled water piping system on an emergency basis. The scope also included installation of 4 bridges over heavily traveled roads, and one underground road transit. All work was to be completed in 7 ½ months.

Solution

Comfort Systems USA developed a team of very talented subcontractors, submitted pricing budgets, and construction methodology to HAS, and was awarded the project on an emergency basis on July 27, 2011 by City of Houston Council. The project was engineered, designed, and installation completed 10 weeks ahead of ahead of schedule. COH requested a goal of 36% minority participation. Our team successfully completed the project with a final minority participation of 51.7%. The project was delivered on budget and ahead of schedule. The project consisted of over 200,000 direct and indirect hours, and was delivered with no reportable safety incidents.

Conclusion

Houston Airport System selected Comfort Systems as the best team to address the issue. Comfort Systems' very qualified team, working 7 days a week finished a very complex project ahead of schedule and was able to keep the existing system operational during the total construction period.
